Hong Kong is joining the global Open Data Day celebration by hosting a virtual event on Saturday, 7 March 2026, alongside communities worldwide advocating for accessible and transparent data. From 14:30 to 15:30 HKT, participants can connect via video conferencing, with live streaming and recordings available on YouTube for those unable to attend live. Organized by the Open Platform Society and Open Source Hong Kong, this online gathering offers a great opportunity to discuss open data successes, identify valuable or missing datasets, and explore ways to advance data openness in our city and beyond. In 2025, community events and activities of Open Source Hong Kong reached new heights: record-breaking conference attendance, growing international recognition for local maintainers, surging corporate adoption of open source tools, and a vibrant ecosystem where individuals, startups, universities, and enterprises all thrive together. A major part of this success is thanks to the steadfast support of 🙇 UDomain 🙇‍♀️, whose generous provision of reliable hosting infrastructure has given us the confidence and stability to focus on building, contributing, and growing the open source movement in Hong Kong.

This year, we continued our efforts with 12 regular 👨‍💻 meetups (here is the complete list). Several of these meetups were organized in collaboration with the Hong Kong Python User Group, bringing hundreds of developers, maintainers, students, and industry friends together to share ideas, learn from one another, and strengthen our local open source community.

We were also deeply involved in PyCon Hong Kong 2025, where several members of our executive committee served on the organizing committee, contributing to 💻 conference design, marketing, and sponsorship efforts. We proudly hosted a booth and provided the facilities for the official debut of PyLadies Hong Kong — a significant milestone for diversity and inclusion in our local Python and open source communities.

In terms of 🤝 affiliation and ✈️ global outreach, we proudly represented Hong Kong on the international stage. We attended PyCon APAC in the Philippines, PyCon Taiwan, PyCon Japan, and COSCUP in Taiwan — where we reconnected with dear friends from Korea’s FOSS For All, PyCon Korea, and the Linux Professional Institute, and delivered a lightning talk to share our experiences. We were also honored to have one of our members speak at GNOME Asia Summit 2025.

We continued supporting the wider ecosystem through active participation: casting individual 🗳️ votes in the Python Software Foundation (PSF) Board of Directors election, representing Open Source Hong Kong in the Open Source Initiative (OSI) Board election, serving as a 💪 supporting organization for the Hong Kong ICT Awards (WTIA Startup and Smart People categories), and having a member act as an assessor for the Student Innovation category.

These travels and contributions reminded us how connected we are to the worldwide open source movement — and how much stronger we become when we stand together.

Looking ahead to 2026, we’re excited about the plans already underway and confident that, with your help, we’ll make even greater impact together. We are still recruiting volunteers — if you’d like to join us in shaping the future of open source in Hong Kong, we’d love to have you on board!

Meetups on Diverse Tech Topics

In 2024, Open Source Hong Kong successfully conducted six meetups, covering a range of fascinating topics such as Raspberry Pi, Generative AI, and Python usage. For the first time, we collaborated with the Kowloon West Cluster of the Hospital Authority to explore open-source use cases within public hospitals. As we look forward to 2025, preparations for our first meetup of the year are already underway. Stay tuned for more details through this link.

Key Role in Conferences

We proudly co-organized with HKCOTA and the Hong Kong Python User Group, contributing significantly to both the Hong Kong Open Source Conference and PyCon HK 2024. At PyCon HK, we welcomed over 350 attendees and hosted 34 insightful talks on the conference day. The second day, known as sprint day, premiered in Hong Kong for the first time and was particularly exciting. With 60 attendees collaborating on six projects, the event not only fostered new friendships but also unveiled numerous possibilities for future collaborations.

Overseas Visits with International Horizon

In 2024, we broadened our horizons by attending PyCon JP, PyCon TW and PyCon APAC. Additionally, we hosted a booth at COSCUP 2024, making the best endeavours to tell the world the good stories of Hong Kong.

AWS speaker Haowen Huang, who will demonstrate various strategies for training LLMs and how to leverage Python and AWS cloud services to address computational challenges. 

Taiwan LLM: Bridging the Linguistic Divide with a Culturally Aligned Language Model

Yen-Ting Lin from National Taiwan University will share insights from developing the "Taiwan LLM" discussing the creation process amidst limited traditional Chinese data and cultural differences across regions. The session will explore how culturally aligned language models can help preserve linguistic diversity.

Numbast: Bridging the gap between CUDA C++ and Python

Michael Wang from Nvidia will showcase how Numbast facilitates rapid end-to-end binding generation between CUDA and Python., offering a deep dive into Numba-CUDA. He will also guide attendees through crafting CUDA kernels using Numba-CUDA and creating bindings with Numbast. Promises to be both challenging and engaging!

Event Review - HKBU AI Force Workshop Series: AI – The Open Source Story

The HKBU AI Force Workshop Series delved into the open source aspect of Artificial Intelligence (AI), with Sammy guiding participants through the landscape of AI. His comparison between Open AI and Open Source AI, particularly regarding ethical standards and collaborative coding environments, offered insights into the industry's openness spectrum. FUNG discussed AI models, including GPT, DALL-E 2, LLaMA 2, and Falcon, and highlighted open source principles, AI development processes, and notable open source AI tools. He also commended the Open Source Initiative (OSI) for their contributions in defining and deeply analyzing the open-source process.

A little bit of History - The Lineage of HKOSCon

The Linuxpilot Vol. 129 in October 2013 outlined the beginning of an incredible journey for the Hong Kong Open Source Conference. A joint effort by the Hong Kong Linux User Group, Opensource Application Knowledge Association, and Open Source Hong Kong, it laid the foundation for what would become an important annual event. As we enter the next decade of HKOSCon, we proudly hand over the leading organizer role to HKCOTA in 2023, confident that Open Source Hong Kong's support will continue to foster the unique open-source spirit of this event. Time may pass, but the essence and energy of open-source innovation endure.

Conference Highlights

Conferences are the cornerstone of our engagement strategy, and this year, we proudly assumed a supportive role in organizing the Hong Kong Open Source Conference 2023 in collaboration with HKCOTA. In addition, our successful orchestration of PyCon HK 2023 on 1111 drew nearly 300 participants for a day of enriching discussions. The conference featured a keynote by Mr. Erik Welch from NVIDIA, who traveled from the US to Hong Kong to share insights on 'Accelerating NetworkX: Fast Graph Analytics with Python.' Furthermore, community booths from PyLadies Tokyo, the Japanese Raspberry Pi Users Group and PyCon APAC added vibrancy, creating a wonderful opportunity for the exchange of ideas and fostering the learning of Python.

Open Source HK Meeting #73 – MySQL: Exploring the MySQL 8.0 features

Many people have been using MySQL 5.6/5.7, and even today, MySQL 8.0 remains a popular choice. However, there are numerous features that users may not be aware of or may not be utilizing to their full potential. Join us for this informative session as we delve into the exploration of new features such as JSON document and GIS, and compare Component Architecture with Plugins in previous versions. We'll also discuss various backup and recovery options, including the traditional mysqldump and the latest MySQL Shell with dump/load utilities. Furthermore, we'll explore maintenance features such as ONLINE DDL/INSTANT add column, CPU Resource Group, and Connection Memory control, among others. Many of us miss the physical learning experience after a few years of virtual PyCon. Nothing beats learning about the Python community firsthand and connecting with like-minded developers and data scientists to broaden your professional network. Co-organized together with Hong Kong Creative Open Technology Association and Python User Group Hong Kong, Open Source Hong Kong are pleased to invite you to attend the PyCon Hong Kong 2022 physical sessions on Oct 29. This event is a gathering of hundreds of “inquisitive, innovative, collaborative” developers and data scientists like you who share a common interest in promoting Python and leveraging data science practical solutions for sustainable development.

We've received numerous proposals from speakers all over the world with brilliant ideas. They will be divided into 12 sessions for the day, including a keynote and two tracks of breakout sessions. Our topics include a wide variety of interests, ranging from the purely technical to the more practically applicable. Some examples of these topics include 3D Visualization with Spatial Data for 5G Planning, Taking Machine Learning Models to Production Using Python and FastAPI. How to investigate the MySQL Operator for Kubernetes using Python, as well as how Python is being applied in the architectural, engineering, construction, and even healthcare industries.

The year 2022 marks the 10th anniversary of HKOSCon. To promote the open source culture and close the distance between developers around the world, we keep organizing talks and workshops on Jun 11. We sincerely invite you to take part in the event online.

Highlight: Age of Automation

AI has become an integral part of our daily life, HKOSCon 2022 has picked several related sharing/workshops to answer the trend. The representative of AWS will tell us the story of AWS Textract Grader – a groundbreaking automated student grading solution to liberate teachers from the tedious grading work.

We will also showcase the Exploratory Data Analysis – data extraction and analysis on Python for machine learning. Finally, our friends from AlviStack will demonstrate the deployment of Kubernetes to orchestrate deployed servers for efficiency and stability enhancement of the service environment.

In the digital age, data security plays a key role in safeguarding our cyber activity and identity. The speakers from MySQL will demonstrate the application of STIG Viewer for MySQL and selected tools that fulfill the STIG for MySQL approved by the Department of Defense (DOD). In addition, we also invited experts to utilize the free resources on GitHub and Datree to maximize the security level of your open source for free!
